Expropriation and Displacement is a project aims to examine the instrumentalisation of architecture in the process of appropriation and disappearance of public space by the state apparatus; through military ‘intervention’ or through the process of gentrification and the re-branding of public space as a space of seemingly ‘inclusive’ popular consumption and privatisation. Building on urbicide, non-western architecture, and post-colonial theory, I questioned the gentrification process as an ethical critique in case of revealing forgotten spatial narratives, and excluded groups. I explored that urban destruction of Sur is not only physical but also inherent philosophical contexts to discuss what can be done and what is undone. Moreover, this project questions the role that public spaces play in ensuring spatial justice, the degree of scrutiny under which the right to assembly comes in the context of the public spaces’ disappearance. This project is a critique for the colonial and modernist ways of practicing architecture.
